Winter 2009 Courses

1. Tafseer-Ul-Quran (Surat Al Fatihah, Al Baqarah and Aali Imaran QURAN-101)

In this course, we will study the significance of each Surah, the context and the meanings.  It also provides a glimpse of the Rules and History in it. In summary, this is an attempt to provide a comprehensive understanding of the Book of Allah as it relates to all aspects of both deen and life.

Text Book: Students should have Tafseer ibn Katheer and In the Shades of the Quran. Other complimentary materials and sources will also be used.

2. Understanding and Memorization of Hadith Nabawi Part I (HAD-202) 

The forty Hadith collection by Imam Al-Nawawi includes some of the most essential , eloquent and comprehensive ahadith of the Prophet (PBUH). In this class, we attempt to understand and memorize them. Learning these ahadith is close to learning the entire Islamic religion.

3. Life of the Prophet Muhammad: History and Lessons Learned (HIS-102)

Love Him? Come, learn and relive his life’s most significant events and the lessons we learn from his life (PBUH) in our time.  We also correct many misconceptions about Islam and about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Text Book: The Sealed Nectar By Al Mubarakpuri.

4. Al Khulafaa’ Al Rashidoun (HIS 201)

The first four caliphs in Islam are credited with their strong support and dedication to Islam and our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).  They are the ones who carried the Torch and spread Islam and establish its most fundamental institutions.  We study their lives and most significant contributions to Islam and humanity.

Each course is completed in 10 sessions with each session lasting for 3 hours. 

All sessions are held on weekends. Every weekend day includes two sessions for two different courses.

Students have the choice to enroll in one or more courses every semester.

By attending only on Saturdays or Sundays, the student can finish at least two courses per semester

If a student attends both weekend days, he/she will be able to finish four courses in a semester.

Each course will be followed by an exam for credit. All students will get certificates for participation. Students who pass the exam will be awarded a certificate of completion

 
Fall Courses

1. Introduction to Sunnah: History, Development, Recording, Proof-values, Texts and Imams.

Sunnah is the second major source of Islam. This course explains its different meanings for various fields of Islamic knowledge. The history and evolution of the various fields of Sunnah and its proof-value are explained. The major texts and significant imams of Sunnah are briefly studied to learn from their exemplary lives and efforts.

2. Fiqh of worship: History, obligations, voluntary acts, rewards, spiritual benefits and contemporary issues related to the main pillars of Islam which are Salat, Zakat, Hajj and Fasting.

This course is essential for every Muslim of any age. It explains the most important aspects, practices and spiritual benefits of the most essential ibadat of Islam. It is simple enough to help ordinary and new Muslims yet very scholarly and sophisticated to benefit highly educated and leaders of Muslim communities.

3. Mustalah of Hadith (Hadith Terminology)

While Hadith is the second most important source of Islam, many muslims do not know the different categories of Hadith and what is acceptable and what is not.  This course will help students understand the categories of acceptable ahadith and the efforts which Muslims scholars made in order to identify unauthentic ahadith.  Furthermore, it will provide students with the sources of the utmost reliable ahadith and the best methodology of interpretation and understanding of such ahadith.

4. Aqidah: Principles of Faith 202

Beliefs in Islam are very important and upon which the practices of Islam are based upon it.  This course will explain the Aqidah as understood and practiced by the four imams of Ahl UsSunnah (Abu Hanifah, Malik, Shafei and Ahmad) with contemporary applications and implications. It is based on the text of Aqidah Tahawiyyah by Imam Abi ja’far At-tahawi and the various explanations of it along the authentication of its Ahadith by Shaikh Nasir-u-ddin Al Albani (May Allah bless their souls)
